New Book Offers UNCOMMON HOPE In The Midst Of HIV/AIDS Pandemic

http://www.hopeandhelpcenter.org/

New Book Offers UNCOMMON HOPE In The Midst Of HIV/AIDS Pandemic
Yesterday at 10:05pm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December1, 2009

“AIDS has never been about the body alone. It is a condition of the body, mind, and spirit. AIDS crosses the depths of despair, soars on clouds of uncommon hope, and sits in hushed silence while time passes and no cure is forthcoming,” says Joshua L. Love, a survivor of HIV/AIDS and drug addiction. His new book, Uncommon Hope , available on December 1, 2009 (World AIDS Day) is inspired by people whose lives are affected by HIV and AIDS. Love found a journey to healing through faith, which led him to his current position as director of the Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) Global HIV/AIDS Ministry and to oversee MCC's Drug and Addictions Literacy Program.

Love says, "Uncommon Hope unveils a strategy to end the silence and inaction by people of faith, in and out of organized religious communities, and other nonprofit agencies who feel called to partner in the work of bringing an end to HIV and AIDS. This step-by-step curriculum allows them to engage volunteers and employees in advocacy, public action, and social support of people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS.

"We can do a lot to diminish the suffering of people living with HIV and AIDS and the unnecessary deaths caused by limited access to healthcare and support services. Local churches and faith-based organizations are often the support system of last resort for vulnerable people. We need to be equipped to act," says Love.

Rev. Dr. Donald E. Messer, author of Breaking the Conspiracy of Silence, said, "Metropolitan Community Churches was addressing the HIV and AIDS crisis before most other denominations were. While others were silent or condemning, MCC was on the forefront of offering Christ's inclusive love and compassion. Those of us in other denominations need to listen to and learn from MCC, as well as express our gratitude for their selfless ministry over the years."

Executive Director of the Center for Church and Global AIDS, Rev. Dr. Messer added, "In Joshua Love, MCC has an articulate and winsome spokesperson and leader. This superb curriculum, Uncommon Hope, will bless your life and your faith-based organizations and your communities in which they serve."

Joshua L. Love is a survivor of HIV and drug addiction, an activist in the Gay Men's Health Movement, and is committed to serving people where HIV/AIDS and addiction support services are unavailable or limited by extreme poverty and religious oppression. Love was published in IAPAC+, a publication of the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (Spring 2007); produced a documentary entitled We Who Are One Body: A Spiritual Walk with AIDS; and presented at the American Sociological Association 2009 Annual Conference.

He is a clergy candidate with Metropolitan Community Churches and is completing his Master of Divinity at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 2010, he will release a second book Deconstructing Meth, funded by the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Love travels the world to share a message of hope and spiritual renewal through preaching, workshops, and retreats.

About Metropolitan Community Church (MCC)

Metropolitan Community Church, founded in 1968, is a human-rights movement and ministry operating as a Christian denomination in 25 countries around the world. MCC has often been and continues to be one of few leading advocates for vulnerable people in places where religious orthodoxy, sexism, and homophobia can result in violence and death. MCC's promise is stated in its tagline "Tearing Down Walls. Building Up Hope."

About Uncommon Hope

Uncommon Hope offers a dynamic, small-group curriculum designed to support people of faith in answering God's call to end the silence and inaction magnifying the human suffering and death wrought by HIV and AIDS. Whether your church or faith-based organization is just beginning to engage in HIV/AIDS ministry or has a long history in the work, Uncommon Hope provides tools and experiences to foster the development of spiritual responses that are authentic to your community, consistent with the core teachings of all major faith traditions, and respectful of the rich diversity reflected in the lives most impacted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Uncommon Hope is open to and inclusive of all people living with HIV and AIDS, whether they are infected in the body or affected as concerned and caring community members. The program is a progressive, multi-unit curriculum packaged in six chapters, each comprising a combination of educational tools, engaged learning, public action, and social support. Participants are afforded the opportunity to acquire new skills and insight at each stage of the process: Awareness, Truths, Radical Change, and Inspiration.

If you hunger to minister at the true intersection of justice, mercy, compassion and hope, then read the pages of Uncommon Hope.

Metro East Pride calls for the Reinstatement of Teacher

Metro East Pride calls for the Reinstatement of Teacher
www.BellevillePride.com on behalf of www.MetroEastPride.com

Metro East Pride calls for the reinstatement of Dan Delong, a High School teacher in Southwestern School District High School in Piasa, located north of Alton.

Mr. Dan Delong was supsended following the discussion, and reading about homosexuality in animal populations. The Metro East community has rallied in support of the teacher, and calls for the school district and administrators to reverse their decision to suspend this well respcected teacher. (JOIN the FACEBOOK Cause), and look for updates for events & demonstrations in support of Dan Delong

High school teacher suspended after controversial assignment

By Mike Owens
PIASA, IL (KSDK) -- Teacher Dan DeLong is beloved by many of his students, as an educator who pushes the envelope for his students.
But he's not pushing anything right now. Students and parents say he's been suspended from his job at the Southwestern School District High School in Piasa, located north of Alton. At issue: DeLong offered his students optional work by going to a website and reading a scientific report about homosexuality in animals.
The word of his suspension comes from Facebook, the online networking site. His supporters at the school have created a webpage in support of DeLong and more than
400 people have signed on to show support, or at least read details of the dispute.
DeLong teaches honors English to 10th to 12th grade students. The website option was made to a 10th grade class.
Students say the parent of one of the students saw the website and thought it was not appropriate for her child.
School officials, according to parents, have set a hearing for DeLong for Monday night at the school board offices.
You can see that Facebook page in support of DeLong by clicking here.
The controversial article in question can be found here.

Bill's Journey - Homophobe to Advocate
(Feature Story)

This is an account of my journey from prejudice to understanding, acceptance and knowledge that human sexuality is a continuum with everyone occupying a point on the long line between heterosexuality and homosexuality.

I was raised in a traditional family and there was never a doubt as to my sexual orientation. I was profoundly heterosexual and the thought never crossed my mind that there might be persons with a different orientation. Oh yes, there was that classmate that didn't seem to fit into the male norm but it never crossed my mind that there might be a question of his sexual orientation.

Many years later I learned that he was gay. In the locker room and on male only get-togethers there were the inevitable jokes about queers but it never dawned on me that these "queers" might be real people.

After college I entered the United States Air Force and ultimately rose to the rank of Colonel. Though I had been raised by my parents to attend church, during the years that I was in the Air Force, I unconsciously used my frequent moves and overseas assignments as an excuse to not attend church.

In 1980 my wife Helen and I moved back to her childhood home to take care of her mother who at that time had bladder cancer. We attended the church that Helen had been raised in and I found a church home.

The people were friendly and the church did bring a sense of belonging to something larger than myself. Helen and I immersed ourselves in the life of the church and volunteered to help where ever possible.

I served on the church governing body and during my last year on this body was President of the Congregation. This led to wider church activities and I was elected to the Board of Directors of the Conference, one of the adjudicatory bodies for the denomination.

On my first Board of Directors meeting I was confronted with an issue that
would challenge me; a young woman preparing for the ministry had revealed that
she was in a committed lesbian relation. The Board was to vote at the next meeting
as to whether she should be continued in preparation for ministry or removed.

I consulted my pastor and re-read the passages in the Bible that seemed to be
relevant to the issue and voted with the majority to remove her from preparation for the ministry. Six years later I joined another Conference committee and at the first meeting I attended the same young woman had petitioned for reinstatement.

To the committees credit they decided to engage in an in depth study of the issue of homosexuality. This study made me question whether I was acting in a fashion consistent with being a good Christian. So a short time later I joined a study group on the same subject at my church.

The study at church was valuable, we did in depth Bible study. For the first time I met openly gay persons (male and female) and found that they are just like you and me. We also talked to parents of gay persons and discovered that in many cases when they found that their child was gay and turned to their pastor for solace, the pastor told them was that their child was an unrepentant sinner; hardly a Christian message.

With the study at the Conference committee and at church completed I was totally convinced that many persons use the Bible as a screen to hide their prejudice and homophobia. Jesus never mentioned homosexuality and was proactive in support of the marginalized. The New Testament message is Love and God's grace, freedom from the laws of the Old Testament. Time and again the message is - all are acceptable in God's sight; then how can I defy God?

In the years following my conversion to acceptance and understanding I have many friends who are gay or lesbian; they are good Christians and worthy people, working, paying mortgages, attending church, leading normal lives just as their heterosexual friends and neighbors do. This would be a better world if everyone would put aside their prejudices and live in harmony with all.

Beyond Stonewall: Why We March~ Sept 20th (FREE)

Come attend this FREE performance of "Beyond Stonewall: Why We March," a short play written by Joan Lipkin of That Uppity Theatre Company and Tennessee Playwright Sharon Brandy.

This performance is being performed in support of the National Equality March scheduled in October.

---
Excerpt from St. Louis Post-Dispatch 9/6/09 article by Doug Moore:

After the Post-Dispatch posted to STLtoday.com its April story about prominent gays turning to activism, the reader comments swelled to more than 330, many of them negative. Several targeted Bill Donius, former chairman of Pulaski Bank, who was featured in the story.

"It is ridiculous that there is a story about a successful gay man in the paper," wrote "W. Champion," the screen name of one reader.

It is one of 16 reader comments sprinkled throughout a new play Lipkin has written with Sharon Bandy, a playwright from Chattanooga, Tenn.

In a conversation shortly after the story was published, Donius suggested to Lipkin that she turn the reader comments into some kind of performance piece.

"I like the idea of all the different voices, but I didn't feel like it was sufficiently dramatic. It didn't have a spine," said Lipkin.

Then their conversation turned to the National Equality March in Washington next month. Activists from across the country plan to march on the National Mall and urge Congress and President Barack Obama to make gay rights a priority. This push is something that many commenters on the story thought was a bad idea.

"The country has undeniable fundamental values, and the gay lifestyle is not one of them," wrote reader USF1965.

But the march gave the playwrights the spine of their story

Metro East Pride Announces Leadership for 2010 Event

http://www.jobsandjustice.org/

on behalf of http://www.bellevillepride.com/ http://www.hopeandhelpcenter.org/

Dear Friends of Metro East Pride:

With your support, Metro East Pride Festival for 2009 was a resounding success for all involved from beginning to end. Large crowds from both sides of the river included strawberry-clad toddlers, senior citizens, students, gay and straight couples, and humans of almost every ethnic group.

Sixty-five booths included corporations, civic organizations, churches, arts and crafts, and of course—food and beer vendors. Most businesses within the Pride area benefited from the event. An eclectic variety of performers kept people entertained.

Lea DeLaria returned to a hometown crowd who embraced her with open arms. Her father, godmother, elementary and high school teachers and old friends were among those who brought lawn chairs and enthusiastically applauded her reminiscences, comments, and jazz vocalizations. She graciously posed for pictures and signed CDs in front of Escapade after the performance.

Once again, Pride Festival was accomplished without any major incidents involved. We thank you for your contribution to our success.

Now, we are transitioning to a new leadership team for Pride Festival for 2010.

The officers are:
Kay Campbell, 2010 President
Colby Kluthe, 2010 Vice-President
Sherry Haskins and Amy Wiser.

Advisors include: Chuck Adams, Jerry Angevine, Janet Brannon, Rick Hembree, Vicki Niederhofer, Harold Schwartz, Carol Williams, Terry Williams, and Janet Wright.

Our goals for 2010 are outlined as follows:

1. Embrace diversity in all its forms. Be inclusive of all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender, race or ethnic group, or age. (The just-concluded festival was a panorama of this.)

A vision that includes greater community interaction between the LBGT community and Belleville. This involves Pride’s participation in local events and cooperation to make this an even better place to live.

It involves dialogue and support of local businesses. It involves advance planning with businesses located within the Pride Festival perimeters to ensure that any problems are solved and that the Festival is advantageous to all parties.

Increased participation as a group in environmental issues, and in helping to alleviate poverty in our community. We are all cognizant that festivals are fun. We desire to be recognized as a responsible part of our greater community as well.

Thank you for your continued involvement in the success of Pride Festival 2010.

Coordinator for Pride ‘08 and ‘09

National March for Equality - St. Louis AUG 17th

www.HopeandHelpCenter.org

Planning Meeting - National March for Equality (ST. LOUIS)

Show-Me No Hate will be hosting the first of several planning meetings for the National March for Equality. This FREE EVENT will be held on Monday at Mokabee's Coffeehouse, located at Grand & Arsenal in South St. Louis city.

Anyone interested is encouraged to attend this event.
More more information visit SHOW ME NO HATE

Monday, August 17, 2009
Time: 5:15pm - 7:00pm

@ Mokabee's Coffee GRAND & ARSENAL

Description
Come to the first of several planning meetings for the Missouri/St. Louis contingent headed to Washington DC this Fall. All Missouri residents are encouraged to attend this informational meeting on Monday, August 17th at 5:15pm, location is Mokabe's Coffee House near Tower Grove Park. The National March for Equality in Washington DC is Oct 10-11, 2009. This historic event is taking place on the Columbus Day holiday weekend, National Coming Out Day weekend and will be the 30th Anniversary of the first LGBT rights march on the Washington Mall. This meeting is informal and you are encouraged to bring a friend to help with this momentous challenge of bringing as many Missourians to DC in October.

We are currently speaking with several local and regional organizations, politicians and activists on the idea of building a stronger Missouri Marriage Equality coalition. Show Me No Hate believes that Marriage Equality has gained so much ground in 2009 but we feel it will continue to gain support in 2010. We know Missouri was one of the first states where the voters accepted writing discrimination into our Constitution.

A Marriage Equality coalition would help reverse that discrimination and the climate it has since created. There has even been talk about putting Marriage Equality back up to the Missouri Voters in 2012.For any organization to tackle such an ambitious voter ballot iniative they need to be not only organized but focused with a clear plan to win. This takes money, time and lots of grassroots energy. We feel strongly in the possibility of building that energy now for a victory in 2012.

We are looking for some creative thinkers as we explore different ideas. Nothing is on or off the table other than building a strong Marriage Equality coalition in our state. Are you ready to Show Us your creativity? Please send us an email at ShowMeNoHate@GMAIL.com
