MCCGSL Choir wins regional How Sweet the Sound award for Best Overall Choir!
by Mccgsl Church on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 12:50pm

Metropolitan Community Church of Greater Saint Louis is excited to announce the results of the How Sweet the Sound: A Verizon Experience regional choir competition held at the Scottrade Center, St. Louis, Missouri, on Monday, September 26, 2011. The Best Large Choir prize was awarded to Metropolitan Community Church of Greater Saint Louis (MCCGSL) for their 53 member choir performance of “Psalm 68, Let Our God Arise” by Kurt Carr. Jerry Smith, MCCGSL Director of Music, accepted the $10,000 award from Host Donald Lawrence in front of a packed house at the Scottrade Center.

Additionally, the MCCGSL choir was selected as Regional Competition, Best Overall Choir. As winners of this award, the MCCGSL choir received all expense paid travel to Los Angeles, California, to perform in the Verizon Best National Choir Competition on Friday, October 28, 2011, at the Staples Center. Each choir member received a medal with the inscription “Regional Competition, Best Overall Choir”; a Droid mobile phone, and a $50 gift certificate for activation.

The Judges for the How Sweet The Sound Regional Competition in St. Louis were Marvin Sapp, Shirley Caesar, and Dorinda Clark-Cole. In commenting on the MCCGSL choir performance, Pastor Marvin Sapp said, “Let me start by saying this is what heaven is supposed to look like! It’s supposed to look like a multiplicity of cultures, colors, creeds all coming together for the sole purpose of magnifying and glorifying the God of our fathers.” Judge Shirley Caesar shared, “They did not miss a beat.” Dorinda Clark-Cole reported, “This is what heaven really does look like. You all did a wonderful performance."

Jerry Smith told the choir before the stage, “Sing to God and do not worry about anything else. We are here to worship and to give God our best.” Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Carol Trissell stated, “I am so proud of our church choir! Their vocal performance was amazing – truly the best of their three years in Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound competition. Yet, I am even more proud of their genuine, praise-filled spirits which demonstrated without a doubt that God’s love is for ALL people.”

MCC of Greater Saint Louis was founded in 1973 as an outreach to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities. Today, it has a membership of 413 and owns its own facility for worship and ministry at 1919 S. Broadway, in the Soulard neighborhood. Its mission is to accept, embody, and declare God’s love for all. MCCGSL lives out this mission by providing direct ministries of worship, education, pastoral care, and outreach to those seeking a progressive and inclusive faith community. MCCGSL also collaborates with other community nonprofits such as One St. Louis, Peter & Paul Community Services, Winter Outreach, St. Louis Pridefest, Black Pride, MetroEast Pride, St. Louis Effort for AIDS, Metropolitan Congregations United, Doorways, Food Outreach, Growing American Youth, and Show Me No Hate.

to be with.  One man showed us a

battle like dance with a bison.

We were all on a beautiful
island with hundreds of people. My
friend from high school was with us
+ after the man showed us the

we all went to sleep.   When I
woke up I stepped out of the room
and headed toward the bathroom.
All of the people on the island were
very attractive + I felt good to
be among them. I felt something
strange in my mouth like my
tooth on my left side was loosining.

Panic set in + I tried to keep calm.
I reached a mirror + was horrified
to find my front teeth falling out.

I pressed them back in + went out
to the beach where there were many people.

FEATURED- From the Banging Inside My Head

www.BellevillePride.com
by: Tess Farnham/ MetroEast NEWS

January 23, 2011

(BELLEVILLE)

From the Banging Inside My Head to this Mostly Imperfect Draft

What the Pigeon Sees in Passing

And as if by synchronicity
I see her on the one way street,
Flitting fiercely in a broken body,
One indigo wing still intact,
One dragged across the snowy pavement
Its imprint brushed in the iridescence
of a last dance

The curbsides are packed with the cars of strangers,
In varying stages of disrepair, another
is steady in its movement towards my tail light
. . .In the meantime, I am reminded
of having been down this road with a starling. . .
watching her move from tree to tree
with a tumor on her throat

And in turning back, again I see the solitary form
Stumble into the road
Just emerged from temporary refuge under a silver Chrysler
The one wing still moving madly against
The fallen sky

And I wonder what the pigeon sees
As she is passing:
Days of swooping past pedestrians
To poop on the bayonets
of soldiers standing guard at the war memorial;

First sex in flight
over the rose
window of an urban cathedral;

The first nest carefullly tended in the
Rafters of some abandoned
sky
Scraper, and the tiny cries
From fledglings as they bent the grass
In their grand attempts
To defy gravity

Rage rage against the dying of the flight
I say to the side mirror
the car still idling at the stop sign,
its interior
so very cold and glowing inside

Gateway Sisters Become a Fully Vested Order

By Colby Kluthe- Vice-President- Metro East Pride
MetroEast NEWS

(ST. LOUIS)

Gateway Sisters Become a Fully Vested Order

The Gateway Sisters of Indulgence were recently elevated to a "Full House" of the International Order of Perpetual Indulgence. A quest begun five years ago.

In 2005, two gay men from St. Louis visited Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco, CA and encountered two sisters who were accepting donations for admission to the fair.

Upon further inquiry they learned of the international organization established in 1979, which raises money for HIV/AIDS education as well as numerous other charities.

Shortly thereafter, they returned to St. Louis and began in earnest the formation of a local order. The Gateway Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is a 501c(3) Non-Profit Organization. Our local Order has more than 10 fully professed Sisters & Guards, as well as novices who too, will someday become fully professed.

Mother Superior - Kristie Kreams, and her co-founder Guard Brian O'knoitall, received the charge of the Gateway Sisters. Sister Right Sarong (Nashville SPI) presided over the ceremony, as well as SPI representatives from other Orders in the United States.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SPI), also called Order of Perpetual Indulgence (OPI) in Australia and elsewhere, is a charity, protest, and street performance organization that uses drag and Catholic imagery to call attention to sexual intolerance and satirize issues of gender and morality.

By 2007, the Gateway Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence had been recognized as a "mission" of the International Order. The process of becoming fully vested, a mission must demonstrate community service , as well as a presence in our community that further acceptance of all people.

The Gateway Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence exequatur Ceremony was hosted at the Bad Dog Saloon August 28, 2010. This ceremony signifies its elevation to a full order of the International movement. Since our first Metro East Pride celebration in 2008, the sisters have been a mainstay of the our annual celebration in June.

They continue to support diversity & equality throughout our region. Each SPI Order is made up of Sisters, and the more masculine counter-part the Guards. Each has a very clear mission, and a love-spirit calling, to which each of them have answered.
As an observer, there is no doubt they are as sanctified as any clergy person you will ever encounter. A clear and visable presence of peace and love in our community.

Community Dignitaries Project Ark, Transhaven Missouri, and Metro East Pride were in attendance, as well as fellow Sisters and Guards from Orders located in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Nashville.

New Book Offers UNCOMMON HOPE In The Midst Of HIV/AIDS Pandemic

http://www.hopeandhelpcenter.org/

New Book Offers UNCOMMON HOPE In The Midst Of HIV/AIDS Pandemic
Yesterday at 10:05pm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December1, 2009

“AIDS has never been about the body alone. It is a condition of the body, mind, and spirit. AIDS crosses the depths of despair, soars on clouds of uncommon hope, and sits in hushed silence while time passes and no cure is forthcoming,” says Joshua L. Love, a survivor of HIV/AIDS and drug addiction. His new book, Uncommon Hope , available on December 1, 2009 (World AIDS Day) is inspired by people whose lives are affected by HIV and AIDS. Love found a journey to healing through faith, which led him to his current position as director of the Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) Global HIV/AIDS Ministry and to oversee MCC's Drug and Addictions Literacy Program.

Love says, "Uncommon Hope unveils a strategy to end the silence and inaction by people of faith, in and out of organized religious communities, and other nonprofit agencies who feel called to partner in the work of bringing an end to HIV and AIDS. This step-by-step curriculum allows them to engage volunteers and employees in advocacy, public action, and social support of people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS.

"We can do a lot to diminish the suffering of people living with HIV and AIDS and the unnecessary deaths caused by limited access to healthcare and support services. Local churches and faith-based organizations are often the support system of last resort for vulnerable people. We need to be equipped to act," says Love.

Rev. Dr. Donald E. Messer, author of Breaking the Conspiracy of Silence, said, "Metropolitan Community Churches was addressing the HIV and AIDS crisis before most other denominations were. While others were silent or condemning, MCC was on the forefront of offering Christ's inclusive love and compassion. Those of us in other denominations need to listen to and learn from MCC, as well as express our gratitude for their selfless ministry over the years."

Executive Director of the Center for Church and Global AIDS, Rev. Dr. Messer added, "In Joshua Love, MCC has an articulate and winsome spokesperson and leader. This superb curriculum, Uncommon Hope, will bless your life and your faith-based organizations and your communities in which they serve."

Joshua L. Love is a survivor of HIV and drug addiction, an activist in the Gay Men's Health Movement, and is committed to serving people where HIV/AIDS and addiction support services are unavailable or limited by extreme poverty and religious oppression. Love was published in IAPAC+, a publication of the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (Spring 2007); produced a documentary entitled We Who Are One Body: A Spiritual Walk with AIDS; and presented at the American Sociological Association 2009 Annual Conference.

He is a clergy candidate with Metropolitan Community Churches and is completing his Master of Divinity at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 2010, he will release a second book Deconstructing Meth, funded by the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Love travels the world to share a message of hope and spiritual renewal through preaching, workshops, and retreats.

About Metropolitan Community Church (MCC)

Metropolitan Community Church, founded in 1968, is a human-rights movement and ministry operating as a Christian denomination in 25 countries around the world. MCC has often been and continues to be one of few leading advocates for vulnerable people in places where religious orthodoxy, sexism, and homophobia can result in violence and death. MCC's promise is stated in its tagline "Tearing Down Walls. Building Up Hope."

About Uncommon Hope

Uncommon Hope offers a dynamic, small-group curriculum designed to support people of faith in answering God's call to end the silence and inaction magnifying the human suffering and death wrought by HIV and AIDS. Whether your church or faith-based organization is just beginning to engage in HIV/AIDS ministry or has a long history in the work, Uncommon Hope provides tools and experiences to foster the development of spiritual responses that are authentic to your community, consistent with the core teachings of all major faith traditions, and respectful of the rich diversity reflected in the lives most impacted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Uncommon Hope is open to and inclusive of all people living with HIV and AIDS, whether they are infected in the body or affected as concerned and caring community members. The program is a progressive, multi-unit curriculum packaged in six chapters, each comprising a combination of educational tools, engaged learning, public action, and social support. Participants are afforded the opportunity to acquire new skills and insight at each stage of the process: Awareness, Truths, Radical Change, and Inspiration.

If you hunger to minister at the true intersection of justice, mercy, compassion and hope, then read the pages of Uncommon Hope.

Sunday Church not your thing? MCCGSL Offers an Alternative~

www.MCCGSL.org
www.HopeandHelpCenter.Org

Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis offers an alternative to those in our community, who aren't able to visit on Sunday mornings. By offering our Video Sermons, Weekly Devotionals, and other resources completely online.

"The Outreach to our community, must reach beyond our four walls. ",
explains Colby Kluthe, editor of The Hope and Help Center. "By offering such resources online we are able to offer spiritual support to those who may not live near our facilities, including those who live in rural parts of our region, and quite simply, those who are not yet comfortable going to church in the traditional sense."

MCC of Greater St. Louis, has been a part of the fabric of the LGBT community since 1973, and has long since had a tradition of "Radical Inclusiveness". With a newly renovated facility at 1919 S. Broadway, MCCGSL is looking forward to expanded outreach as the congregation of more than 350, continues to grow in both number, and spiritual unity.

"Come as you Are... Believing as you do." Is a phrase the members have really taken to heart.
However it is recognized that many in our community-at-large consider MCC a church home. Today they have a variety of ways to become a part of our ministry, even if "Going to church" simply isn't thier style."

"Through our online outreach, we have been able to connect with many people, who otherwise may not have found a community where they are welcome, and accepted in God's love~ just as they are. Many of them, participate in the "virtual world", and are what I like to call "Online Members".

MCC of Greater St. Louis Worships Sundays at 9AM, and 10:30AM , 1919 South Broadway in Soulard, or as stay updated online at www.MCCGSL.org, and at
The Hope and Help Center, located online at www.HopeandHelpCenter.org .
