Metro East Pride to Become Independent Non-Profit
http://www.bellevillepride.com/
on Behalf of: CESJ (Coalition for Economic and Social Justice)
December 21, 2010
(BELLEVILLE)
After three successful years, the Metro East Pride Organization will soon become its own non-profit.
In a public statement sent today to Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert, CESJ Board member Jesse Arms thanks those who began Metro East Pride (MEP) in 2008, and continued the tradition which has become a regionally recognized Pride Festival, held each June.
As of December 12, 2010 Metro East Pride became an independent organization and no longer needs the non-profit sponsorship from CESJ, having submitted its own 501(c)3 Application in the state of Illinois. Upon completion of this process, fund-raising efforts will resume in preparation for the 4th annual festival, planned for June 2011.
In review of the efforts over the past three years, Arms personally thanks individuals and community partners who have devoted so much time and effort in the early years of Pride Celebrations in Belleville.
We thank Mayor Eckert and Alderwoman Meyer for their courageous support and leadership. And thanks to CESJ Board members, Betty and Anne, for flying here from San Francisco to wish us success.
2011--Thanks for doing the hard work of writing the by laws and submitting the application for MEP's 501c3.

Rick Garcia parts from Equality Illinois, But not without a fight
on Behalf of: Windy City Times By: Yasmin Nair
December 18, 2010
(CHICAGO)
Rick Garcia, former Public Policy director with Equality Illinois, was suprisingly "let go" this week from the statewide organization with a reputation of working the trenches along side policy-makers in Springfield, and in every corner of the state.
[Garcia said that Equality Illinois CEO Bernard Cherkasov told him, "I am going to be very gracious and amicable," and Garcia said he looked at him and said, "Do you think for one minute that I'm going to be gracious and amicable?"] *
Without doubt, the communities of Southern Illinois are in shock at this development. Garcia who is a Metro East native, has a proven track record working closely in our region on issues of equality. Garcia was featured as the keynote speaker at Metro East Pride 2010, and recently coordinated the Civil Union Equality Summit, in Belleville along with MEGS (Metro East Gays & Straights).
When Windy City times writer Yasmin Nair asks, Garcia explains:
"[I went into the office for a meeting at 5 o'clock last night [ Dec. 16 ] .
I went into Bernard's office. There was one of our board members that nobody would know, hello, and I sat down and Bernard just looked at me and said, "Your services are no longer needed and we are terminating you now." Now, the state of Illinois is an at-will state and anybody can be fired at any time, so he just fired my ass at about 5 o'clock last night. Um, about 45 minutes before I was supposed to be over at [ Center on Halsted ] to give a talk.
So he fired me 10 days after we passed a civil-unions bill that only six states have. He fires me. Who has passed more civil-rights legislation in this country than that little nasty—I can't even think of the term—that he would even think of? And then he sits across from me and says, "I'm terminating you because we don't need you up here no more." And that's what he said to me. We're terminating you.] *
Garcia's contribution to the advancement of gay rights in Illinois is undeniable. He was a key figure in the passages of both the amendment of the state's human-rights act that includes sexual orientation and gender identity as well as the civil-unions bill that recently passed through the Illinois General Assembly.

Madison County Entrepreneur Goes for the GOLD

Madison County Entrepreneur Goes for the GOLD
It's that time of year when we baton down hatches, and rummage thru our "proverbial" closets for the things we have not thought about since last year. If your like me, you find last year's red ribbon, a few McDonald's Gift Certificates you forgot to give away, and perhaps if your lucky-- the gold & silver jewelry stashed and forgotten.
Many people each holiday season end up exchanging last years "stuff" for a good start on shopping this year. Its "Thinking Green" in my book, the secondary marketplace is becoming the primary marketplace for many in our communities.
This months featured local business is
GOLD STOP LLC, in Alton, Illinois.
Principal partner, Chad Ellege, and the staff operate four retail outlet sites, as well as operations that visit locations across the metro east and central region of the state.
The next mobile-site will be set up on January 8th, in Litchfield, Illinois.
Until then, they are available for walk-ins at the Alton Square Mall. They also offer a unique in-house "Gold Parties" where your guests leave with cash~

Organizing/Community Building Workshop- DEC 11th

HOST SITE:
Regional Arts Commission
9am- 4pm

Reporting staff at traditional media outlets have been shrinking. Extreme, absurd, and factually incorrect political positions are regularly promoted by the media because sensationalism works well for the "news as entertainment" business model. Meanwhile, progressive organizations struggle to have their perspectives given adequate time in the media, and intelligent discourse is hard to find.
These facts combined with the dire p...olitical outlook in Missouri for 2011 (with an "unapologetic birther" recently elected as Majority Leader of a Republican caucus that is only a couple votes away from a veto-proof majority) mean that progressives need to get proactive making sure that people have access to quality news and analysis. All of the tools are at our fingertips: we just need to get organized about using them.
This one-day workshop on Online Organizing and Community Building will explain the tools of citizen journalism, discuss how these tools are needed in our current political environment, and help to build a community of caring, thoughtful people who can work together to make sure that St. Louisans have access to quality information. It will also kick off a new project that will help to promote quality journalism from progressives in the St. Louis area.
The basic plan for the workshop (at the wonderful event space of the Regional Arts Commission on the Delmar Loop) is as follows:
9:00 AM Welcome and Introductions
9:30 - 10:30 Panel Discussion of the Current State of Missouri Politics (including representatives from the Educators Association and Missouri Jobs with Justice)
10:30 -11:00 Discussion of the Current State of the Media (and its many flaws) (with Sylvester Brown!)
11:00-11:30 Introduction to the Basics of Online Organizing and Community Building
11:30-12:30 Workshop Session A
12:30-1:30 Lunch
1:30 - 2:30 Workshop Session B
2:30 - 3:30 Workshop Session C
3:30-4 Wrap-up and follow-up plans
Workshops will include: blogging 101, social networking, covering friendly events, covering unfriendly events, working with the traditional media, videography, and online community-building. We will also try to leave open space during the last workshop session for people to suggest and even lead their own workshops.
We have an opportunity to change the conversation for the better: let's make sure we use it!
Assistance for this event was generously provided by the AFL-CIO, AFSCME, and St. Louis Jobs with Justice.
Cost is Free but you do need to RSVP! RSVP by clicking "Attending" or by sending an email to washupeacecoalition@gmail.
