TransHaven is pleased to announce that Jaye Westermann of Saint Louis, Missouri has been named Project Coordinator. Jaye will be reporting as staff personnel and has accepted the volunteer and uncompensated position.
Jaye is a graduate of Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville and is employed by Planned Parenthood as a Clinical Instructor, Jaye identifies as Intersex and GenderQueer. Among Jaye’s primary duties will be to represent us in advocacy’s reflecting the Intersex and GenderQueer Communities and represent TransHaven as our laison to those Communities. We welcome Jaye to our Team, who will share in reflection of our diverse outreach to the entire Community.

MCCGSL Choir wins regional How Sweet the Sound award for Best Overall Choir!

Metropolitan Community Church of Greater Saint Louis is excited to announce the results of the How Sweet the Sound: A Verizon Experience regional choir competition held at the Scottrade Center, St. Louis, Missouri, on Monday, September 26, 2011. The Best Large Choir prize was awarded to Metropolitan Community Church of Greater Saint Louis (MCCGSL) for their 53 member choir performance of “Psalm 68, Let Our God Arise” by Kurt Carr. Jerry Smith, MCCGSL Director of Music, accepted the $10,000 award from Host Donald Lawrence in front of a packed house at the Scottrade Center.
Additionally, the MCCGSL choir was selected as Regional Competition, Best Overall Choir. As winners of this award, the MCCGSL choir received all expense paid travel to Los Angeles, California, to perform in the Verizon Best National Choir Competition on Friday, October 28, 2011, at the Staples Center. Each choir member received a medal with the inscription “Regional Competition, Best Overall Choir”; a Droid mobile phone, and a $50 gift certificate for activation.
The Judges for the How Sweet The Sound Regional Competition in St. Louis were Marvin Sapp, Shirley Caesar, and Dorinda Clark-Cole. In commenting on the MCCGSL choir performance, Pastor Marvin Sapp said, “Let me start by saying this is what heaven is supposed to look like! It’s supposed to look like a multiplicity of cultures, colors, creeds all coming together for the sole purpose of magnifying and glorifying the God of our fathers.” Judge Shirley Caesar shared, “They did not miss a beat.” Dorinda Clark-Cole reported, “This is what heaven really does look like. You all did a wonderful performance."
Jerry Smith told the choir before the stage, “Sing to God and do not worry about anything else. We are here to worship and to give God our best.” Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Carol Trissell stated, “I am so proud of our church choir! Their vocal performance was amazing – truly the best of their three years in Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound competition. Yet, I am even more proud of their genuine, praise-filled spirits which demonstrated without a doubt that God’s love is for ALL people.”
MCC of Greater Saint Louis was founded in 1973 as an outreach to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities. Today, it has a membership of 413 and owns its own facility for worship and ministry at 1919 S. Broadway, in the Soulard neighborhood. Its mission is to accept, embody, and declare God’s love for all. MCCGSL lives out this mission by providing direct ministries of worship, education, pastoral care, and outreach to those seeking a progressive and inclusive faith community. MCCGSL also collaborates with other community nonprofits such as One St. Louis, Peter & Paul Community Services, Winter Outreach, St. Louis Pridefest, Black Pride, MetroEast Pride, St. Louis Effort for AIDS, Metropolitan Congregations United, Doorways, Food Outreach, Growing American Youth, and Show Me No Hate.

Metro East Pride has become the veteran festival of Southern Illinois, celebrating its 4th Festival on June 18th.
The "Main Street" Festival in Belleville always takes on a spirit of "homecoming" celebration for many throughout the St. Louis region.
The Metro East Pride (MEPSI) organization has become more than a festival, but an advocacy that represents the LGBTQIA community throughout the year. If you haven't seen the current board of directors out and about, chances are you may still be in the closet.
The 2011 Festival was a truly amazing experience with vendors and organizations of vast variety. People of all ages and backgrounds converge around Club-Escapade in a demonstration of the very best our community has to offer.
The 4th Annual Metro East Pride festival was a huge success with a large number of artisans and entertainers and food court selections you wait all year to enjoy. This years festival was well attended and enjoyed picture perfect weather throughout the event.
2011 Also marked the first year of offering a Royal Court celebrating the entertainers that work in our community year-round.
The main stage also featured returning standards such as Band Together, and newcomers such as EarthSol , and Youre Not Kablamo as well as appearances by Y-98 Radio's Courtney Landrum and Dieta Pepsi.
Pride celebrations in Belleville, have really become a part of the city's fabric, and undoubtedly has paved the way for other festivals which are beginning to spring up across the state. In 2011, both Springfield and Carbondale will hold pride festivals, each bringing new opportunities to engage and advance the issues of equality for all people who call Illinois home.

The MEP(Metro East Pride) organization is currently enrolling vendors for the 2011 season. This years festival will be the 4th to be held on June 18th, in downtown Belleville. Vendor enrollment is available online at the Metro East Pride website.
Vendor fees in 2011 remain affordable for small business owners and non-profit organizations who wish to support diversity & equality in Southern Illinois. Standard spaces are available for $50 and can be upgraded to include electricity and/or food service.Each vendor provides their own service space (i.e. Table, Chairs & Canopy ect.), and may also choose to support ACME TENT, who can provide set-up and removal of Canopy the day of the event. "The Biscuit Sister Show" Series Arrives in Paducah

The much anticipated debut of the the "Biscuit Sister Show" opened this past weekend at Jim's Place in Paducah,Kentucky.
This monthly series is to be held the first Friday of each month and will most certainly continue as a show of shows. The second show is scheduled for May 7th.
This Summer will mark the 5th annual Pride Picnic, and the city also has hosted visits by TransHaven, and is the home of MCC of Paducah, a spirit filled community that creates "safe-space" for those who are seeking a supportive community of allies.
The Buscuit Sister Troupe includes some of St. Louis' top performers:

Alejandra LeBlanc Leight and Will - you two are off the chain and I had a blast with you guys.
Paducah, while a relatively small community has proven itself as a regional hub for the LGBT communities of Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois. Jim's Place has marked itself as the premier nightspot in Paducah, hosting a number of performers and events since they opened in 2010.Thanks to Mark and Alex for treating us like Divas and can't wait to come back May 7 for the next Biscuit Baking"

Audrey Pearson, the recently appointed president of Saint Louis Black Pride welcomed community and civic leaders yesterday at "The Space" in St. Louis' midtown district. A meet and greet happy hour allowed the entire region to gather and meet the leadership that will be preparing for the festival in August this year.
Representatives from many major LGBT organizations were represented, signaling a spirit of unity among all those who support issues of equality in our region.
In addition to the St. Louis Black Pride Board of Directors, attendee's included Leon Braxton, of the I-CARE campaign, Representatives from the Pride Pages, Pride St. Louis, and Chance Baker of Metro East Pride.
STL Black pride seeks to further causes of equality and understanding of the challenges faced by those in our community at large.
Throughout the coming months, STL Black Pride will host several social events and opportunity for community involvement as they move towards the "main event" scheduled this year for August 18th thru 21st.
The next major event will be held on March 26th, "Spring Fling" at Big Moe's in the Grove Neighborhood as well as a scheduled Movie Night night series which will start April 2, 2011.

The student lead Gay Straight Alliance at Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville has announced details for the community wide day of workshops and retreat for students and allies of the LGBTIQ communities of the Metro-East Region.
The day-long event will offer multiple topics for discussion, as well as a diverse panel of civic leaders and experts to facilitate conversations about issues of gender diversity and sexuality.
In addition to the workshop day, GSA-SIUE has planned a number of events in the coming month, including Bowling for Equality Event for the MetroEast Area April 8th and a "Discussion about Marriage" (March 26th)
